Let's Clean Out My Closet! Organization and De-Cluttering Tips...

Oh how happy I am that today is FRIDAY! ...and not just any Friday, the Friday that my man turned 30. Wow how time flies!
Anyway, I thought I'd squeeze in this little blog post (with a big video attached) before the weekend gets too far underway.

I filmed this video a few weeks ago shortly after realizing that it had been quite some time since I had actually done a real "closet cleaning".
So I got all up in there (ahem, my closet), and got to work. Only to realize that while I had a lot of stuff to get rid of, most of the cleaning had already been done for me.
Yeah, I know. That totally sounds like it makes zero sense. But it will once I explain my go-to closet cleaning/de-cluttering/organization methods that really and truly work so well for me.
You'll get all the juicy details in the video, but it basically involves being honest with yourself every day. Not just on days you decide to clean your closet. If you're constantly taking inventory of what you have and following a few of my tips, you'll be greeted every single day with a closet full of things that you love that actually works. I swear, it's totally possible.
Don't freak out... I know that must sound like I'm constantly cleaning out my closet, but I'm really not. I don't even donate or get rid of clothes all that often. Maybe three times a year.

So what better way to show you all my closet-cleaning ways than to actually clean out my closet with you all and share with you my go-to tips and methods for a fab closet space. In the video, I also show you all what I decided to get rid of and why.

The video is full of so much more than I can share with you all here, but here are some of my main tips:
  • Keep a bag or box somewhere hidden in your closet so that when you come across an item you're not "feeling" anymore, you can quickly throw it in.
  • When you go on a bit of a shopping spree, put the same amount of clothes as you bring in into the "give away" bag.
  • Anything damaged, worn-out, ill-fitting (and not worth tailoring), uncomfortable, or something that you're constantly trying to make "work" unsuccessfully goes straight into the give away bag.
  • Donate/sell (basically just get rid of) the give away bag contents every 4 months. This works awesome because you'll be more inclined to put items you're not sure about into a bag you're not getting rid of right away. It's easier to commit to. You can also avoid getting rid of anything you may want later, as 4 months is a pretty good time frame in which you can catch your mistake if you change your mind. You can always get the items back out if you decide you want them!
I hope this inspires you all to make your closets become an organized, clutter-free space you love! Like I explain in the video, work with what you have. You can totally have a fab closet of any size.

So what closet cleaning/organization tips work best for YOU?
Hope you all have the best weekend!!

  2. You are hilarious in this video, Tiff! Cleaning out my closet and organizing it is very therapeutic for me so I do it quite often. I agree with all your tips but my favorite is giving things away that don't make you feel good. I do have a question: what do you do with the items that you have received from family or friends and you do not like but can't bring yourself to throw/give/sell them away? Do you keep or give away?

  3. Thanks so much for sharing! This post is exactly the inspiration I needed to get my butt moving and revamp my closet. I've been procrastinating for a while now and hanging onto items that "I might wear again some day" just like you said (but of course I never do). Seeing your tidy, well organized closet, makes me want to have the same ASAP.

  11. Great tips! I just went through my closet (okay, so I feel like I go through my closet nearly every month re-evaluating things), and I really love the tip about the bag/basket to put in clothes you're not sure about!

  12. I would LOVE for you to share your daily cleaning routines!! Laundry, too! I work from home, as well, and find that I have trouble justifying deep cleaning and daily laundering, instead of working. HELP!

  13. My rule is if I haven't worn it for a year, I donate it to Goodwill. If four seasons have passed and I haven't worn something, chances are I won't. And I usually work off season - donate old winter stuff in the summer and vice versa. I've done it this way for years and it really works to keep my closet organized.

  14. The crown sweater would make a great pillow. Even if you are not into the crown you could use the backside of the sweater and have a nice fluffy pillow to accent a chair. If sewing is not in your dyi bag of tricks your local dry cleaner could make a simple pillow cover for you.

    1. thanks! I'll work on adding something like that soon. But if you're on Pinterest, you should have the share button somewhere on your browser that you can add straight from your account. Then no matter what site you're on, you can easily pin and share whatever you like!

  16. Awesome! I love cleaning out my space and making room for newer items. I donate a lot of my clothing which makes me feel better about doing it too rather than just tossing them out. Being that this video kicked my OCD into overdrive, I am off to clean out my 2nd closet! :D

  26. I usually push things I don't really wear to the back of my closet if I'm not quite ready to get rid of it yet and then the next time I clean out my closet I donate them. It's a good way to ease into the difficult process hahaha!

  28. "If you're constantly taking inventory of what you have...you'll be greeted every single day with a closet full of things that you love that actually works." This is such an important point. I recently had to clean out and organize my makeup, which was housed in various drawers, bags, and shelves between two bathrooms. Eesh. It felt so good to toss stuff I hadn't worn in forever (and which had long since expired). I'm hoping I can continue to do this on a weekly basis instead of waiting a year and then being faced with a total mess. I wrote about it here: http://fullclutch.com/12866/how-to-organize-your-makeup/

  29. You are so funny. This video was great. Thanks for sharing. Don't judge, but I haven't cleaned my closet in months. I definitely have neglected my stuff when I am constantly re-organizing my little toddlers closet (since they grow out of clothes so fast). I do need to take some time to take care of my stuff! Thanks for being an inspiration. :) Anyone know of a great/easy/inexpensive way to store shoes if you don't have a walk in closet. I have a very long closet, just not walk in. Thanks!

  31. Too Cute!! So funny! I love the expressions you have when you reveal a "ah ha" moment. I am in the process of giving hubby the master walk-in closet and creating a dream closet room, hopefully something like yours. I wish you were here to help me decide a layout (there are 4 windows and very little wall space). Thank you so much for taking the time out to share this.
