Months ago I tweeted that I was making Chicken & Dumplings in the Crockpot.
...or "Chicken n' Dumplins" as we call it in the south (they taste better if you say it like that, FYI).
Lots of recipe requests followed and have continued to this day. I figured I would put it on my blog so I could reference this post (and so obviously you guys could too) instead of me having to retype the recipe a million times through twitter or having to search back through MONTHS of tweets. No bueno.
So here it is! My super easy recipe for the ultimate comfort food, Chicken & Dumplings. I've made them the "southern" homemade way before (all southern grandmas know this skill and if you have the chance, get one to teach you sometime...haha), but I swear, this way is tastier. Sorry, grandmas. And who can resist a good Crock Pot recipe?
You will DIE at how good this stuff is. It's one of my husband's all time fav dinners.
If you're a bit perplexed as to what the heck this stuff even is, it's super simple. Chicken and biscuits (cooked into a broth with the chicken to make yummy chewy dumplings). It's THE BEST. Around our house, we eat it in a big bowl by itself. Sometimes, I'll make a veggie to go with it. It's delish with green beans or cooked carrots. It can go with anything really.
But prepare for a dumplin'-induced food coma after this. I warned you.
Ok enough gushing about how much I love this stuff... here's the goods.
Crock Pot Chicken & Dumplings
(about 4 servings)
3-10.5 oz. cans cream of chicken soup (condensed, just the soup, don't add the water)
1-15 oz. can chicken broth
add about half a small can (about 5 oz.) of water
1 small onion, diced
3 or 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
sprinkle of parsley
salt and pepper
1 can refrigerator biscuits (not flaky layers), about 8 biscuits
Add all ingredients (except biscuits) to the Crock Pot. Cook on high for 5 hours. Chicken should fall apart by this point, but you can gently break it up with a spoon or fork. Cut up biscuits into pieces and throw them into the mix. Make sure to "reset" the Crock Pot (turn it back on) to high and cook biscuits for about 40 minutes.
So eat up, buttercups! It's delish stuff. Hope you love it!
My favorite kind of recipe....easy and tasty. THanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteOh yes we will try this! *chomp*

I've made this before from your previous posts about it and it is to die delish!!! Sooo good and so easy to make! My whole really enjoyed it and its perfect for those cold fall nights, thanks :)
ReplyDeleteSounds yummy & easy! I make my dumplings myself with flour, water & salt! I also add a can of cream of chicken to mine too :)
ReplyDeleteBiscuit? I'm not from the South..What's that? :)
ReplyDeleteThis look YUMMY!
ReplyDeleteI have made your chicken n' dumplin recipe several times since your tweet last year, Tif and you are right, it is absolutely delish! My husband and kids love it when I make it--we usually have it with mashed potatoes and yes, you have to eat it in a big bowl:)

This sounds yummy BUT what on earth are refrigerator biscuits ? I live in Germany and thi sis the sort of food we love but , what to do re mystery biscuits ...... Canned broth is a as alike as not a no no here What would you suggest in place ?
ReplyDeletehaha ;) Refrigerator biscuits are basically raw, canned biscuit dough. Very common here. So they're just raw biscuit dough. The homemade "southern grandma" way to make them, which I've made several times before involves boiling your chicken breasts on the stove (making your own chicken broth) and then dropping in the raw dough pieces, which in turn, thicken the broth and give it a good consistency. However, everyone that has had this version and the homemade version say the crock pot version is tastier :)
DeleteYum... trying it this weekend! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds so good! Im definitely going to try this recipe very soon now that its getting chilly outside. I love veggies though so ill probably add some carrots and celery to this (that's the way my mom would make it). Thanks for the recipe! :)
ReplyDeletei tried this recipe when you first tweeted it and I was a little nervous because I am not from the south and had never made nor eaten chicken n' dumplins! But my boyfriend loves it so I tried it.... he LOVED it! He said they seriously rivaled his grandma's!! BEST COMPLIMENT EVER!!!!
ReplyDeleteI remember asking you for the recipe waayyy back, but never made it. Thanks for posting because I am definitely making this..like today!
ReplyDeletei dont get it? the biscut part -do i put it in the crockpot raw? like pillsbery dough and it will cook?
ReplyDeleteYep! Just drop the raw dough in (cut into pieces) and it will cook just like anything else in the crock pot.
DeleteI swear the Twitter version is cooking in my crock pot RIGHT NOW. Thank you for adding it to your blog. I've passed this recipe onto friends. Now I can point them to your blog. :)
ReplyDeleteTiffany - is the parsley fresh or dried? I can't wait to make this! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI just put everything in the crock pot to make this but Im wondering if diced potatoes would work in this as well. I want to put the potatoes in, but I have heard mixed reviews of them not cooking enough in the crock pot. Thoughts?
ReplyDeleteI usually slice and dice my potatoes and cook them in the microwave for a few minutes first just to get them started and then put them in the crockpot. Unless you're cooking something for 8-10 hours they usually could use a little extra zap before they go in the pot!

ReplyDeleteThis is simmering in my crockpot at this very moment! I am drooling just thinking about it. I LOVE Chicken & Dumplings, and this is so much easier than how I've made it in the past. I hope it is really as delicious as it sounds and looks! :)
ReplyDeleteYummy I want some food looks good
ReplyDeleteI love chicken dumplings Yummy
ReplyDeleteooh yum, I'm going to be making this soon looks so good.
ReplyDeleteOMG, made these tonight! Sooo good and much easier than my normal "grandma recipe". Thanks for this recipe.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! I made this and my bf definitely food coma-ed on the couch lol. Please share more recipes with us!
ReplyDeleteWow! looks yummy and appetizing. I love cooking and I think I should try chicken dumplings at home. Big thanks.
ReplyDeleteMade this tonight, except I added cubed white potatoes & baby carrots. Its cold & rainy here & it sounded like it would be more like a rainy night meal. Looks like it made a lot so since there are only 2 of us I will be freezing the leftovers.

ReplyDeleteGreat tasting recipe. I've made this a few times now and have since added carrots and celery to it just to have a way for my kids to eat their veggies. I'm making this now for a company party for my employees at www.modernfanoutlet.com because I know they'll all love it too. Heck, after they eat it they may start selling more modern ceiling fans for me because it'll make them love me... haha.
ReplyDeleteI'm making this right now as we speak. I can't wait to try it. It sounds yummmmmmmy!(:
ReplyDeleteI made this the other day and the only thing I didn't prefer is the biscuits. I recommend making your own dough and placing them in there instead of the canned ones. Other than that-the sauce was DELICIOUS!!
ReplyDeleteCan I use a whole chicken instead? What difference will it make?
ReplyDeleteShould ingredients be stired at first?
ReplyDeleteDo you stir everything before adding the biscuits?
