Winter Foundation Tips & Routine

The cold and dry winter weather can really do a number on your skin. Your favorite products that work perfectly for your skin in the warmer months may not work the same on your skin in the drier winter months.
Changing seasons means changing skin care routines.
Don't stop at just switching to a different moisturizer. Changing your actual foundation routine is just as much a part of your skin care than anything else. So by keeping a few things in mind, you can keep your skin looking healthy and perfect all winter long.

Here are my go-to tips for winter foundation:

-Use a primer (skip the ones labeled "matifying" if that's what you usually use and opt for a regular formula). Using a primer before foundation creates a "buffer" for any areas of drier skin that would normally catch the pigments in foundation and look yucky. So the invisible primer will catch them first. Sounds weird, but trust me. It works.
-Switch to a more moisturizing, nourishing foundation. If you normally use a foundation labeled "for oily skin", "oil control", or "matifying", switch it up to a formula for normal skin or one with a more natural finish. These usually are less drying.
-If you have patchy areas of dry skin that are difficult to get rid of, use a damp sponge (like a BeautyBlender) to apply foundation to reduce visible patchy and flaky areas.
-Go light on setting powder and switch to one with a more sheer and natural finish, like MAC Mineralized Skinifinish Natural (pressed), which is what I use year-round.
...and of course, the most important- Use a good moisturizer after cleansing your skin, before applying any makeup. I currently use the Origins Vitazing or the Jergens Natural Glow Faces SPF25.

Check out my step-by-step tutorial below for a demonstration of my winter foundation routine.

  1. Hey tiff great vid!
I was wondering what color/shade your maybelline eye concealer is?

  2. I was looking at the Sigma website and trying to decide about ordering some brushes. Basically, I would like a foundation brush, powder brush, and concealer brush. Please tell me which are your favorites when it comes to these 3. They have a special for $24 for both the F82 & F84...would these two be good for foundation and powder? I would really like your opinion. thanks, Tiffany!

  4. @Farhaaa She uses the shade color "fair" in her concealer but I recall her saying in another video that she wanted light but they didn't have it. Tiffany your skin is looking amazing as usual. Great vid girl

  5. Great video...considering that I have jotted down each and every product you used in it for future reference during one of my impulsive shopping sprees that often times directs itself towards makeup purchases. I love trying out new foundations and I am glad to see that you featured a drugstore foundation in your video. People need to know that they do not have to spend a lot of money for great foundation. The drugstore has some pretty amazing products sometimes. I'm not going to lie...I would have never bothered to try the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind foundation. Not sure if the 'Age rewind' threw me off or just the fact that I have not used their products a lot but I am glad you had positive feedback on it. That is probably the first item that will be purchased, followed by the MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural powder. I just hate trying to figure out what shade I am in things, so hopefully I will get the right one.

  6. Hey Tiffany! Just wanted to know what shade your foundation was in this video? I have yellow undertones and it is so hard to find the right shade for my skin. Thanks!!!

  7. I started using brushes -- if I'm not too rushed -- for applying foundation and like you say it blends the product really well over the skin so you avoid a caked on look. The climate in Georgia sound a lot like the one in West KY, maybe even a little warmer (in Atlanta). I suppose almost every climate, aside from the tropical climates would benefit from your make-up advice.

  19. Have you ever used a spray to set your makeup? I have problems with blush and foundation coming off during the day and eyeshadow creasing. What would you recommend?

For those of you who have asked about color, I've heard her say she uses the fair (lightest color) of the foundation.

  21. Thanks for all the great advice. I just got the best mineral powder foundation but I don't think it's enough coverage so I still like to wear liquid foundation underneath. Thanks for sharing, I'm going to go give it a try.
