How I get my Spring/Summer Glow with Sunless Products

Spring is here... Summer is just around the corner, and if any of you are like me, it's hard to find the perfect balance between the glow of a light tan and feeling like you're taking care of your skin. What I mean is that UV tanning isn't a lot of our first options when it comes to getting the perfect Summer glow. I love being out in the sun, but I prefer to get my actual "tan" with sunless products. I get asked a lot about what types of tanning products I use and honestly, I do a lot of spray tanning. I've always gone to a local tanning salon to use the VersaSpa spray booth system. It's a lot like Mystic if you're familiar with that, but the color is better in my opinion and the VersaSpa booth actually dries you! So I'm all over that. However, that's not available or convenient to a lot of people and over time, it can get pricey. So I've been going maybe once a month to get a spray tan and using some great sunless tanning products in between that have been working great! These are the ones I've been using and loving this season.

I've always been a fan of the Jergens Natural Glow line. This season, I purchased the daily body lotion in the "firming" formula. Figure a little firming can't hurt, right? I get the formula designed for medium skin tones. I find that it actually looks more natural on my skin than the one for fair skin. I find that the fair formulas in the Jergens line always look a little yellow/orange on me. But the medium formulas are usually great. The only bad thing is the inevitable DHA smell after the formula reacts with your skin after a few hours. It's not too strong and definitely not unbearable. I'm willing to sacrifice that for the great results!
I apply it after showering, and always wash my hands and in between my fingers really well.

Another great product I tried for the first time last year is the Jergens Natural Glow foaming daily moisturizer. It's definitely not as moisturizing as the regular lotion version, but it dries incredibly fast. I use this the mornings that I'm in a hurry and don't have time to worry about the lotion drying a bit before getting dressed. The results are great with this one as well. I use the formula designed for medium to tan skin tones.

Where my face is concerned, I like to use a product designed just for the face. This Natural Glow Face daily moisturizer with spf20 is really what got me back into using the Jergens line of gradual sunless tanners. It's a great facial moisturizer. I've used it for years. Mostly during the Spring and Summer months though. Again, I use the formula designed for medium/tan skin tones.

This is truly one of my must-have products I cannot ever be without. It's the Too Faced Tanning Bed in a Tube Face. It's an instant bronzer for your face that also contains a sunless tanner. I apply it before applying makeup and it evens out my skin tone really nicely and gives me a natural summer glow. Literally a perfect tan glow on your face without any work- No tanning, no waiting for sunless products to work. It's instant gratification. And it smells like pineapple, which is a plus in my book! I definitely don't use it everyday, but it's great when I'm feeling a little pale and the color is totally adjustable and buildable.

Happy tanning everyone! Hope this helped you out where sunless tanners are concerned. I know it can be frustrating to find the product that works just right for you, but the drugstore really has so many great options where gradual sunless tanners are concerned (which I think are the most natural looking over time). Good luck finding the right products for you!

Tiffany

*If you're wanting more info on the VersaSpa spray booth I mentioned, I probably can't help you much. I found it by chance at a local tanning salon a few years ago. Call some tanning salons in your area and inquire about their spray tanning systems. Most will have some type of spray tan system to offer.

thanks for the info! i've always preferred to stay my natural colour because i just don't think i look good "tanned." but my skin is all different colours (face, neck, torso, legs are all different shades! ugh!) and so i've been thinking about using self tanners to get some sort of uniformity going on.

did you recommend either of the face products even for people with acne prone skin?

Hmm, maybe I need to try the medium color. I always bought the fair because I figured the medium color would look to 'fake' on me but I can kinda notice the orange/yellow tone with the fair color... Too bad I just bought the mousse!

Dani- YES! I am acne prone and those two face products I mentioned are awesome. They're not very heavy and I believe the Jergens one is oil free. However, both have never caused any breakouts for me. They're worth a try!

I've had good results with the SunFX spray tanning system at my local salon. I'm a fair person with freckles and it looked great and natural. Thanks for the product reccomendations, I've been looking for a good drugstore self tanner. I tried the L'Oreal Sublime Glow and it was streaky and orangey on me.

I didn't know about that Two Faced one, sounds good. You are right, the Jergens fair one is organe, I think anyone can use the medium one.
I am loving the Bare Essentials Faux Tan right now though for the body. It's amazing.

Thank you so much, Tiffany. I agree on the Too Faced face product and I will defitinetly try Jergens, too. I like to use the Sienna X Tanning Mist. The result is very natural and lasts up to 2 weeks and there is nearly no smell. My skin tends to develop a very bad smell with most products, but this one doesn't. Best regards

I love the Jergens line, too...but that darn smell! It just stinks. I hope some cute, geeky science chick somewhere is working on this...hahaha

I do the same thing. I spray tan monthly and use self tanners and tan extenders in between to maintain my tan. Some of my favorite products are EnvyTan products. My salon recommended them to me, and they are the best I have ever tried.

After a spray tan, I use Body Armor. Body Armor is a spray tan extender and using this product makes my tan last twice as long and fade evenly.

I also use Lasting Envy: Spray Tan In A Can. This is an incredible product. The tan is a beautiful shade of bronze. It's so easy to use that I do not need any help with hard to reach places! If you are looking for a tan the quality of the ones you receive in a salon, this is the product that can provide that.

clinique has an amazing one that works fairly quickly and doesn't have that icky smell

Sun Tan City has VersaSpa in most places now! I used it when I was pregnant with my youngest (totally safe!) I love love love the Jergins lotion! Have you, or anyone, tried it in the express version? I saw it at walmart but was afraid it would be too orangy. I just ordered the Sun Love line but it hasn't gotten here yet, this is my first year sunless tanning, I have always went to tanning beds in the past!

Hey Tiffany... In response to your ideas for upcoming tutorials, what about doing a look similar to Kim Kardashian's everyday look. Her makeup is always flawless, as is yours. I would love to see a sultry, everyday look like Kim's. Thanks for always keeping us insipired and looking beautiful!

I want to try the mousse! Do you think it could be a bad idea with my acne prone skin (torso/shoulders)?

I spray tan about once a week and am addicted. I have considered using the Sublime Glow tanner though because I've heard so many good things about it.

I have wanted to try this out for a while. I think I will call around to see if I can find the VersaSpa one. Thanks a million girly and keep talking cause we're all listening, love ya :)

Could you by any chance do a tutorial on how to apply Too Faced Tanning Bed in a Tube Face? I love the smell and texture but it always comes out way to dark for me and my hand need to be washed very well. I think it could be a great product if I know how to handle it.

I found an amazing sunless tanner, SexySymbol Aerotan. It doesn't have that awful smell and you just spray it on and rub it in. It actually smells good. I bought it at the Salon where I get my hair done but it is also listed on Amazon. Be sure that you look for the tanner not the hair stuff. Hope you can find it and give it a try.

Hi Tiffany. I have a very important question. How the hell do you get your body to look evenly tanned? I mean, how do you apply it on your back, for instance. Can u do a tutorial on that, please?

Anna on April 20, 2010 9:41 PM said...[Reply]

Hm, I did not have good luck with the Jergens face tanner. I was excited to try it because I watched one of your videos where you mentioned it and I saw it was oil free...but it broke me out really bad. I have tried it a few times, but it does not do well on my skin I guess. I think I am going to use it up by applying it to my arms/legs where it can't break me out :)

Thanks for the post!

mymyb on April 21, 2010 7:04 PM said...[Reply]

please make a tutorial on self-tanner application on your back!

Hey Tiffany! I was wondering if you could give me some advice on applying self tanner. I have used the Jergens Natural Glow and the Vaseline line as well and I don't know what to do when it comes to my hands and feet. The product gathers between my fingers and toes and also in the folds of skin on my knuckles and toes. It looks awful and unnatural. If I rinse my hands completely and don't apply product to my feet, the tan cuts off at the wrists and ankles and that doesn't look natural either. :/ How can I get a natural looking, even tan on my hands and feet? Thanks very much!

I have somewhat sensitive, fair skin (NC15-although this picture is from me after a serious spray tan and loads of bronzer)and had a bad reaction to the Jergen's Sunless Tanner for the face, as well as Neutrogena, and L'Oreal. I also have found that the Jergen's body formula leaves me a bit too orange for my taste and the L'Oreal Sublime is so sparkly I look like a Cullen family member. I just discovered Banana Boat Summer Color Sunless Tanner in Light/Medium and I can not say enough good things about it. I have used it all over-face and body-and not had a single break out. The color is natural and the price is unbelievable-around $6-7 at Wal-Mart. Once I start my spray tanning for the season, I will switch over to their medium/dark color. Another benefit to the Banana Boat sunless tanner is it seems to be idiot-proof. I have not had any streaks and I'm not the most careful when I apply it.
