New Nails for Spring...

1.24.10

It's no secret that pastels are always popular trends in Spring collections, but this year, I'm especially loving the light, bright pinks and corals for the upcoming season. Essie has always been a favorite brand of mine, but I've been especially loving it over the past few months. I picked up a few colors from their Spring collection (which I'm definitely going to add to soon!) as well as a new MAC shade.

First, my favorite...
Essie Tart Deco
This is by far one of the best nail polishes I've came across in a very long time. The color, the formula... everything. It's a bit more orange than it actually photographed. When I paint my nails, I like to build the color in thin coats. A lot of the time, nail polish formulas will let me down and it makes me have to glob on too much because it's thin and streaky. With this one, it applies evenly and opaque with one thin coat. If you were in a hurry, you could probably get away with one coat. But with two, it builds to a gorgeous, even peach color that is bright and creamy pastel at the same time. Love it.
When I bought this, I thought the color in the bottle looked a bit too similar to MAC's Coconut Ice, which I was wearing on my nails at the time. I almost didn't buy it. I am SO glad I did, because these two colors are so very different. ...and honestly, the MAC formula in that shade sucks and just doesn't compare to Essie's Tart Deco.

MAC Coconut Ice
In the bottle, it's an absolutely gorgeous shade. This one is a bit more pink and the color isn't as intense. However the formula is not great. Thin and very streaky, which at this point I kind of always expect from MAC nail polish. But it's a nice color, so when I actually have the time and patience to apply 3 coats, I'll reach for it again. In the picture, I had done two generous coats.

And last, another shade from Essie's Spring collection. Honestly, when I saw the collection advertised in magazines and even in the store when I saw them in person, I wanted this color the most! I'm constantly looking for a nice light, bright, OPAQUE, cream (no frost) pink.

Essie Pop Art Pink
...and after trying this, I'm still looking. I'm disappointed in this one because it's much more sheer than I expected. And I love Essie, but lets just be honest... Do they really need ANOTHER sheer pink? It seems they have an endless range of this exact shade already. So I don't quite get it. You can see how sheer it is in the pictures, and that is with 2 *very* generous coats. It's definitely a shade I'll use when I want a sheer pink and natural look. But I've already got a few of those already, so I was just a little disappointed.

With that being said, I would love for you guys to recommend good pinks to me- Ones that look similar to the shade of this one, but is more opaque. What are your favorite pinks?

-Tiffany

I think Sephora by OPI's Dear Diary is a great opaque pale pink color. I too have searched for one that is not streaky.

Tiffany.. I'm curious what you though of the Zoya polishes. How is the formula? I am very impressed with the extremely large selection of colors. Jen.

My favorite pink is Essie's Mod Squad and OPI's strawberry margarite. For a lighter pink, I love OPI Suzie and the Lifeguard, and Bubble Bath.

OPI mod about you is almost that exact shade only VERY opaque. not sure if that is your cup of tea, but it certainly is a great color.

Try OPI Got a Date to Knight, it's super girly! If you wanna go very opaque, try OPI Mod about You. It'll instantly make your hands/feet look 10 times tanner than they actually are~

Tart Deco looks amazing! I just got Van D'Go today (was thinking I'd want one of the lilac/lavender shades, but gravitated toward that one instead!) and am SO in love with it! I like OPI Coney Island Cotton Candy too, but I think it's more on the nude side than pink.

Hi Tiffany!

My favorite light pink is get me to the Taj on time by OPI which is a TINY bit shimmery but i love it on my skin tone which seems very similar to yours. A coral pink I like is Elephantastic Pink. Both these colors are in the India collection which was released some time ago but i love them both! And i think they are both still available. I use both these colors a lot! Some neon yet not grossly neon colors i like are Hyper by LA girl from urban outfitters, Explosive by victoria's secret, and Don't know...beets me! by OPI. All of which are great colors!

Come and see some of my youtube videos at makeupandmorebyrobin, you were a huge inspiration for me to start my channel! Thanks

Hey Tiffany,
I was wondering what camera settings and lighting you use for you nail pictures. I do a Nail of the Week on my blog and it is frustrating when the colors never look the same. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

Hi Tiffany,

Get OPI's Mod About You. Just image google it for swatches. It is VERY opaque and very light pink.

I got compliments for it at the MAC counter actually...hehe.. :)

Thanks for the swatches.. I love nail polishes (not as much as eyeshadows though).

I think my favorite of these three swatches is the Essie; it's so pretty on your skin tone; orange hues dont look good on me so I will live vicariously through you.

I haven't tried this shade myself, but I've been hearing good things about China Glaze Something Sweet. It's from the new spring collection. It's very opaque.

Sephora by OPI's True Romantic is a really good pink. It's slightly sheer with one coat, but opaque after two. It's a really pretty girly pink color that I just love (I'm not usually a pink nail person, either). :)

Bubble Bath by OPI can be opaque with two thick or three thin coats.

OPI by Sephora's A True Romantic is a great opaque pink color and is in a set right now with Metro Chic and Domestic Goddess.

I love Essie polishes. For the most part their formulas are ridiculously shiny and they have a beautiful color range. My only problem is I am attracted to the nudes and light pinks, which are almost ALWAYS sheer. it drives me nuts because I cant tell if any of them are actually opaque!!! Tart Deco looks amazing on and I may purchase that, but I am so done with this Essie guessing game. I get much more satisfaction out of OPI and Sephora by OPI.

Jenni on January 26, 2010 11:45 AM said...[Reply]

Definitely OPI Mod About You, Essie Fiji, China Glaze Something Sweet. Those are opaque, creamy pinks.

This isn't about nails but I purchased the Buxom eye liner and I dont know if its supposed to be super thick but its difficult to put on the lower lash line, I end up looking like a vampire. I think maybe its too dry and out dated, I bought it on Ebay....since I have never used this type of product before I dont know what to expect. What is the eyeliner you like the best, that goes on smooth and is easy to work with? I got my money back and I'd like to buy another product. I love your videos, they're so helpful. Tx hun...

Tiffany,

The opaque sort of "dupe" (it's a teensy bit lighter) is China Glaze's Something Sweet from the Up & Away collection. OPI's Panda-monium Pink looks nice too if you would prefer the slightest hint of lavender.

I usually comparison shop by looking at Vampy Varnish's (VV) and Scrangie's swatches before I think about buying a color. I can gauge how they'll look on me as they're both rather pale (but I'm cool-toned as opposed to warm-toned). I usually compile a list when I see the bottles and ax about 1/2 after seeing Scrangie's and VV's swatches; somehow colors look a teensy bit different depending on nail length.

I have the same trouble. I generally put down a white nail polish then apply the pink color I want. That usually helps bring the creamy-intensity you're looking for.

I love that Tarte Deco! Essie really is a great brand. I was looking for a brighter, opaque pink cause it seemed like every pink I bought was sheer! I was watching "Leave it Lama's" one day (I know, kinda dorky) and Shayne was putting this really pretty pink on her nails and you could tell the bottle was Essie so I looked up what color people thought she might be wearing and ended up buying "Figi" by Essie. Its so pretty and you only need 2 coats to get a really opaque finish. Any way, try it out if you don't have it! Take care!

LOVE Tart Deco... I couldn't find it at the Ulta by my house though!

Whitney on February 6, 2010 12:06 AM said...[Reply]

OPI's Mod About You.. it's super opaque and a very light pink. Also, I saw that someone else mentioned Sephora by OPI's Dear Diary.. I would NOT recommend that shade to you! I own that polish and it looks EXACTLY like the pink Essie polish you are disappointed with and I returned it for that reason.. way too sheer!

coffeygirlb on February 6, 2010 12:13 AM said...[Reply]

It looks great on you, tarte deco, that is! However, I hate it on me, or maybe just in person. You're right, it is a lot more orange than it looks here. It looks like a lovely fruity drink in your pic, on me it looks like a neon orange white out-like hybrid. Blech! I was so stoked about it too, after seeing your nails! Oh well, can't love em' all I guess:) I do love all of my other essie's. Oh, and you can still get forget me knots on amazon! Just a little fyi:)
