Topcoat Superior to Seche

If you are into nail products and you've ever browsed the "higher-end" nail polish section at your favorite stores, you've probably heard of Seche Vite topcoat. I only recently bought it after hearing wonderful things about it. However, I really had never looked much into topcoats because I've been faithful to a certain one by Sally Hansen for years.

Sally Hansen Mega Shine Extended Wear Top Coat

Of course, through the many I've gone through, the bottle has changed a bit over the years, but honestly, this stuff is the best topcoat I've ever used...In my opinion, even better than Seche. The formulas seem almost identical. Even the scent is the same (which slightly differs from most nail polish). It has that same thick feeling and when applied over wet nail polish and creates an even, glass-like finish. Best part, it seems to dry extremely fast, even faster than Seche.

The first time I used Seche, I was a little fooled. It looked super shiny...SUPER shiny. I thought it may have been possible that I had found something superior to my beloved Sally Hansen one. Honestly, I was just impressed that something actually was similar to the Mega Shine, simply because I had never found anything like it. But after a day, the shine just wasn't as high as I'd hoped anymore. It seemed to wear off. Nothing horrible or anything, but it was definitely no Sally Hansen Mega Shine... I also feel that the Sally Hansen really prolongs the wear of my nail polish much better. I've used Seche for weeks now and have had the same experience with it with several different polishes and formulas. Don't get me wrong, Seche Vite is GOOOD stuff. Would I have LOVED it if I hadn't have had the Mega Shine to compare it to?? Yep. But nothing compares to my Mega Shine. If you've never tried it, I would obviously highly recommend it. Now keep in mind, the Seche Vite is around $9.00 most places (I got mine from Ulta). However, it's on sale right now at Ulta for $4.99. The Sally Hansen Mega Shine is around $7.00 most places. So you're not going to be saving any money or getting a great deal or anything by trying the Sally. I just feel that it's better.
My bottle of Mega Shine is about 7 months old and it's in the older bottle. So I REALLY hope they haven't changed the formula at all, but over several years and several other packaging design changes, it's stayed the same. Hopefully it always will!
You can find the Sally Hansen Mega Shine Extended wear topcoat in most drugstores--anywhere that Sally Hansen products are sold.

I totally love this topcoat too! It gives such a glassy feel to the polish, and really quickly, it's so nice.

this stuff is good, but the smell is so bad. My mom and can always tell when I would use this and complain. I know all nail polish smells but this is by far the worst I've had. Does it not smell that bad for you?

anonymous: It actually smells a little less "tangy" haha than nail polish. It has a sweeter smell. Identical to the Seche Vite :) Definitely not unbearable though. It actually smells better than normal nail polish

...just to clarify...that was only my opinion about it smelling better than nail polish...haha

I love this too! (: I think the Seche Vite smells really bad though.

You should try Nail Magic from Sally Beauty Supply. All I can say is it is AH-MAZING! My mom and I can't get enough of it. I greatly recommend it!

I've been using this stuff for years too. Keep seeing Seche reviews and thought about trying it but good to hear I can stick with the one I already love. :)

I love my Seche Vite but I find that with certain nail polish brands (OPI surprisingly) it chips after only a few days. I tried it with an Orly color and it stays put. Hmm... def interested in trying this out now! Thanks for the recommendation!

Love that you like less expensive brands, too! I love this topcoat as well.

Thanks so much, Tiffany! I'm going to go get some! What do you like as a base coat?

That's the only topcoat I would ever use... it is the best!

Thanks for the information! I am definitely going to try this and the Seche out!

Also I was wondering if you knew anything that prevents nails from breaking or helps strengthen nails?

I am so excited to give this one a try Tiffany! I remember what you said about the seche vite top coat. It is great, but it does chip after a few days. So, I was at the grocery store and picked one up today and now I can't wait to try it tonight. Thanks for sharing your favorite with us!

Have you ever tried Rock Base & Top Coats? They are sold at Sally Beauty Supply (I think $6 a piece) and work great!! The top coat is by far the best top coat I've ever used -- it dries super fast (must apply it to wet polish) and leaves a glass-like finish. It also keeps your manicure from chipping too. I'd highly recommend Rock nail products!

Thanks for the recommendation. I was so curious about it I purchased it. I usually use Essie fast drying top coats (I had Good to Go and now I have To Dry For, which I absolutely LOVE). I was really skeptical about this one, but I gave it a go it works quite well as a fast drying top coat. The shine, in deed, is excellent, but I have to say I HATE the packaging!!! Who, for the effing love of GOD, thought that a clear glass package was not good enough?! It makes it that much harder to control the amount of polish on the brush :(
So in my opinion - great product, crappy package...

I just bought this the other day and I must agree that the glassy finish lasts longer than Seche Vite's. I've never personally used Seche Vite, but my manicurist has used it on me a couple times before. After trying this, I may never get to try Seche Vite since I love it so much. I am, however, having some slight difficulties with this. I just painted my nails yesterday and painted one layer of this top coat on each nail but today my nail polish is already chipping. I visited MUA and saw that I'm not the only one that has this problem. In fact, most of the reviewers seemed to be facing the same thing. What are we doing wrong/how are you applying this so that your nail polish lasts?

I love the way this looks but I'm having terrible problems not only with chipping (usually it goes one full day OK then chips the second) but with the "shrinkage" where it shrinks back from the tips. I thought at first maybe it was just the formula of the nail polish I was using at the time but I've tried several different ones and they all shrink :(

Okay Tiffany, I'm gonna give it a shot! Gonna run down to Wal-Green's & pick it up. Couldn't find it @ Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market.

I've tried Seche Vite (found @ a local beauty supply) & was really disappointed! I get chips with OPI, Nicole, Elizabeth Arden & China Glaze polishes. So no worth the $.

Thanks for the tip!
