Nails: MAC Violet Fire

MAC: Violet Fire (LE Style Warrior collection)
MAC nail polish.... where do I begin?? It's a serious love-hate relationship. The colors always suck me in. As you can see in the pictures, they look nice, but when I start to use them I'm always let down and reminded of why I hate them. The formula honestly sucks. The end result turns out nice...but that's after 3 coats and a lot of patience. Now I don't own a ton of them or anything (I have about 8), and all of them are the same. Thin, streaky, blehhh. I just don't have much patience with nail polish and 3 coats is just ridiculous. But it seems that's what MAC wants us to do. haha
Time and time again I tell myself, "Tiffany, no more MAC nail polish," and somehow, I always end up with more and more.
But seriously, past all the work and trouble and frustration (I'll say it again, 3 coats is just excessive...) this is probably one of the prettiest colors I've worn in a while. It's a very gorgeous purple with lots of dimension. Gorgeous with a good topcoat--Seche Vite for me, or Sally Hansen Mega Shine (basically the same thing) OH and I think I spot a misprint...maybe? The formula on the bottle says "cream" when it's clearly a frost. hmmm

**Couldn't get a good "true" picture of the color. It's in-between the two pictures, but a little darker and more vibrant. The last pic just looks dull :( Oh well.

  1. The color itself is beautiful but 3 coats and it still looks uneven and blah-ish? I see your point Tiff.

  4. tiffany:

i was wondering what do you do to have that space between your cuticles and the polish (i can see it clearly on you thumb...)?

do you clean with nail polish remover? its so perfect...

love the colour but i don't think i'll be buying!
    too expensive...

  5. I have the same question as Abigail above--I notice that alot of times when I see nail pics, there are spaces between the cuticles and where the polish starts---I'd love to see a nail polish tutorial---it may sound silly, but I just cannot get the polishing thing down. Thanks!

  6. It's a pretty color but I do understand where you are coming from and how putting on 3 coats of polish can be an bit excessive. Eventually MAC might change their formula but then again I did hear that they are going to discontinue MAC nail polishes.

  7. You just leave a space when you paint. A lot of people refer to it as the "gap". Instead of starting right at your cuticle, leave a small space and paint upwards. It can be kind of tricky--there's a great link here that shows how to paint your nails that way http://makeupalley.com/user/notepad/Nailboardwisdom (just scroll and you'll see an image). Sorry, I know I'm not Tiffany but I had trouble doing this too myself for a while. I'm sure Tiffany can give even more specifics.

Love the color. I always look at MAC polishes but I'm so hesitant to buy BC everything I've read says the application sucks and I'm not a pro!

  8. I've noticed that the frosts are hard to use, but I love my cream formula ones - they work pretty well for me with two coats. But you're right the frosts are a pain to use! Pretty colour on you! I am waiting for Style Warriors so I can get peaceable and mercenary :)

  9. The color is really pretty! But I agree that 3 coats is a bit too much. =(

I don't own any MAC nail polishes though. I saw some the other day at the MAC counter. Good thing I didn't get any.

  10. Hey. Thank you for the pictures. Wow, amazing color, even though I agree with you that 3 coats is too much, I still might end up picking this one, just because of this color.

  11. abigail: about the space between the cuticle and the color... I just really try to be careful. I never really paint all the way up to the cuticle because I hate for it to look messy, so I always just put the brush down slightly above it :) You can also put some lotion on your cuticles before painting, then wipe the nails with alcohol, then when you paint, you can easily wipe around the cuticle and any mistakes will come right off :)

  12. Well, I am not an expert when it comes to nails but I think I can tell a bit of streakyness - and I am sure that this is not your fault at all, Tiffany. I heard a lot of these "love/hate" stories about MAC's nail polishes. But then again, the color looks pretty after all. It's a little more expensive, it's a thin mixture and therefore, one has to apply three coats instead of one or two... Sounds like a marketing plan to me. ;)

  13. WAIITTT!! Before you commenters buy this polish, there's one color exactly out there that OPI makes. I use it for my pedicures, all the time.

OPI - Purple With a Purpose!

Seriously. Just search google images. You only need one coat, and it's OPI people! So awesome.

  14. I am kind of funny about MAC polish, but I do like that they go on very smooth and do not bubble. At the MAC store on monday, I purchased this color and the employee who sold it to me warned me it wouldn't come out as vivid as it looks in the bottle with one coat. He explained to me that MAC does this with their nail polishes so that they can be used for layering colors. Makes sense when you think about the whole idea when it comes to MAC, depth and contrast of colors. I still think it's a pretty color. I recently bought 8 bottles of china glaze online for dirt cheap, we'll see how I like them in comparison.

  15. i do not have the patience to make my nails look as good as yours haha. i always end up getting some near my cuticle or on the side. do you really like that seche base coat? i have yet to find a good one that really helps my nail polish stick. my nail polish always peels off within a week, and i use mostly OPI :/

  16. Try NYX nail polishes. They last longer than MAC.

  17. I normally use 3-4 coats of polish, so I don't think it's ridiculous, but I also hate MAC's polish formula! My cremes are a hot mess, and I don't even touch the frosts that I have.

Jessica- I use Barielle Camo, and it's the best base coat I've ever used. That and Seche Vite keep my polish cememnted to my nails until I remove it. Try that! Also, you might consider reapplying your top coat after a few days to keep your mani looking fresh.

  18. for all of those that like this color, you could try sally hansens extreme wear nail polish in purple potion. Its a little darker than this, but its basically the same. The killer between this and sally's is that one is 18 bucks and the other is just 2 dollars at your local drug store. Can you guess which one? The only difference between the formula is that sally hansen's is a bit thicker.
Thats just my tip I would rather spend 2 bucks and spend that 16 bucks on two OPI or China Glaze nail polish.
