LUSH Skincare--My new routine

Ok guys... this post is going to serve more as an "accountability" thing for me more than anything. LET ME EXPLAIN... I'm all about immediate results, which where skincare is concerned, really isn't realistic. So by posting what I'm going to start using and promising a video review on my channel in a few weeks to update you all, I'm forced to stick with it. Good idea huh?
So, for 8 years I used Proactiv with great results, but about 6 months ago, I started noticing a change in my skin. I began getting some hormonal breakouts and it seemed that nothing was really working. Where I used to be able to apply all that harsh benzoyl peroxide to my face twice a day, it seems that now my skin doesn't really respond well to having it's top layer burned off you know? Dry, flaky, irritated skin over long periods of time=wrinkles=no fun. So I'm trying to take a more natural approach. Hmmm....I WONDER what brand I looked to for skin care?? :)

These are the products I got and how I plan to use them:

*LUSH products*
Coal Face cleanser
I'm going to use this twice a day. This cleanser has purifying ingredients which is great for acne-prone skin. It also contains exfoliating granules.

Tea Tree Water Toner
Again, I'm going to use this twice a day after cleansing. You can spray it directly on the face, or onto a cotton pad (which is what I'm going to do). Again, this has ingredients that are purifying and great for clogged pores and blemishes.

Vanishing Cream
(Moisturizer)
This moisturizer is great for people with oily and acne-prone skin. It's the lightest moisturizer LUSH has, however, makes skin feel really comfortable (I've tried this in a sample before). It feels really clean on the skin without the layer of "grossness" some moisturizers can leave behind.

Mask of Magnaminty
I'm going to use this 2-3 times a week as a mask. I decided to purchase this one rather than another one of my beloved fresh face masks by LUSH because this one is the most deep cleansing for breakout-prone skin and is great for clearing blackheads when used properly. Also, it lasts 4 months, so I got the smaller 4.4 oz. container.

THEN, because my skin reacts well to retinol treatments...

Philosopy "On a Clear Day" Retinol Clarifying Lotion
I'm going to use this at night (since retinol breaks down and loses effectiveness in sunlight). This particular lotion treats acne, congested pores, acne scarring/discoloration, and fine lines. This particular formula is great because it's gentle enough to even be used twice a day and contains super moisturizing hylauronic acid and soothing cucumber extract.

Alright, so now I have motivation to stick with this! Expect a review/update video in 2-3 weeks :)

  3. Looks good. I'm sure your makeup contains sunscreen. On A Clear Day has me intrigued. I didn't know it contained hyalauronic acid. Thanks for the blog and makeup tutorials. I always enjoy your videos.

  5. I thought about trying the Philosophy acne line for my teenage son. Can't wait to see what you think. I went to a LUSH counter for the first time yesterday and loved it! I got bath and body stuff though. I'm not ready to leave Philosophy since it works well for me.

  9. Thanks for posting this Tiffany. I am excited to see how this turns out for you. If you have been having hormonal breakouts as bad as I have lately....I know you probably about to pull your hair out. So I hope this works out for you!

  10. I want to know about ' On a clear day' as well. I have Hope in a Jar and When hope is not enough, both make me break out. I see results with the skin texture, clarity etc..but having a chin rash kind of counteracts that. I am going to check out reviews on MUA, it sounds very intriquing.

  14. hi Tiffany,

i watch your channel and follow your blog, and i have similar skin issues. so similar, in fact, that proactiv has not really worked for me in these passed months. what i've decided to do is monitor the ingredients in my skincare products more thoroughly, so i've been using resources like Paula Begoun. She has a website (www.beautypedia.com) and, although you have to subscribe to get all the reviews, there are some that are free (like Lush), and you can also use the cosmetic ingredient dictionary for free.

i'm letting you know just because Lush seems to use some really irritating ingredients in their skincare products. if it works for you then awesome! but my skin is temperamental. i just thought i'd let you know because i think it's a great resource for anyone thinking of trying new things or wondering WHY a certain product is breaking them out.

to rectify my skin issues i've been using a BHA (which is better for skin prone to acne, where AHA is better for sun damage) from Neutrogena (Acne Stress Control) and a spot benzoyl peroxide treatment rather than always using the all-over cream from Proactiv. Paula Begoun has some great info you can even check out on youtube.. it's really helped me out.

sorry for the long post, and good luck! :)

  15. oh, and one more thing, i first saw Paula on a Canadian show called cityline... anyone can use the promotional code 'cityline' for a free subscription. it's only for a couple days or so, but i packed in a ton of research in that time.. and i saw the show mooooonths ago but just used the website at the end of january. i'm 99% sure the code will still work!

  16. I am a huge fan of Lush, and can't wait for your report at the end of your experiment.

I have used coalface before, and have to caution you that it's quite drying.

Also, think about adding Sweet Japanese Girl to your routine. I know it's weird to be putting so much grease on your skin, but you're washing it right off, and then you don't have to use a moisturizer. It's made a humongous difference on my skin. Use SJG at night and coalface in the morning.

    Cheers!

P.S. I LOVE your youtube channel...my makeup looks so much better because of you!

  17. With the Retinol cream.. It can actally get worse before it gets better. I've used them before. It seems like alot of products.. I would just worry about irritating the acne more. Goodluck though! I am going to check out that charcoal soap.

  18. Great idea! I'm looking forward to hearing your results.

I've been considering trying the Philosophy On a Clear Day line b/c I'm getting concerned about my aging skin/wrinkles/dryness. But have a hard time finding things that don't make me break out. I, too, have acne prone skin that just sometimes wigs out. Sadly, ProActive did not work for me. And may have even made things worse. I kind of fell into a routine that started working for me and has kept my skin clear - but I worry about wrinkles.

  19. Hi, Tiffany!

Once you are going to use a retinol product, make sure you will use a sun lotion (or sun screen, I don't know the right words in english) EVERYDAY! I've been using retinol products for the last 8 years (since I was 18, because of acne) and a high sun protection is very important, otherwise you will get blemishes.
Retinol products are very good to treat acne and to prevent wrinkles.

    Kisses from Brazil!

  20. Hi Tiffany!
I love your blog and your videos! please keep continuing them. Anyways please let us know how the philosophy retinol works for you. I need something that is good for breakouts, a couple pimples here and there. Proactiv was too strong for my skin, and it caused my skin to get red and irritated. Any suggestions?

  21. I have the coal face cleanser and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that stuff. It has a pretty strong smell, like actual coal-like, but it WORKS amazing.

You have me HOOKED to lush. I'm going tomorrow to get some products actually. Thanks for all the haul videos!!

  22. Some very interesting comments. My skin has always been kind of acne prone. Never super bad but Im 30 and still getting break outs. I was on the pill for 11 years and during that time my skin was super clear and super dry. I used the clinique #2 toner with mild soap and dd moisturizer. The toner worked awesome to get all the dead skin off which was actually giving me breakouts. When I went off of the pill I tried proactive for about 8 months or so, it worked well to keep the breakouts at bay but my face startd to show sun damage and wrinkles :( I switched to the clinique acne line and IM really happy with it. My once dry skin is now very very oily without "the pill" Im still having problems with the oil but the acne and texture of my skin is doing remarkably well.

  23. heya!
so, i've been using that same skin care regimen from lush (minus the vanishing cream) & it's AWESOME.
i was actually considering making a video about them because they worked so well for me.
i've been using the coal soap & mask of magnaminty for over 6 months. the soap made made a difference in the oilyness of my skin & the mask has noticeably evened out my skin tone.

also, the tea tree toner is a nice complement. not as amazing as the first 2 but still worthwhile.

anyway...hope they work out as well for you! <3

  25. I'm training to become an esthetician..proactiv is widely hated by estheticians everywhere. It unfortunately has been proven to thin out your skin [your skins elasticity is very important, you want it to be nice and plump and healthy] as well as making skin photosensitive..i wouldnt touch that stuff with a 10 foot pole! it always works a while for people, but then randomly your skin will hate it. never touch it again, tiff! :]

  26. you should do a little bit of research on the coal bar. I know that there are some coal products that are carcinogenic even though they can clear up skin problems.

  27. i also use a lot of lush goodies in my routine :) i use herbalism as my cleanser. it's messy until you get the hang of it but i love it. i had been using the other philosophy retinol treatment, "help me", but i wasn't seeing any results and was not working as a spot treatment on my acne. instead i use the best bath store acne gel for regular zits, and when i get a deep, cystic zit, i'll mix the acne gel with some raw honey and leave it on over night... works sooo well. i tried a trial of the vanishing cream and it seems to work well, and might go get a full size. i've also given the best bath store shea butter face lotion a try for a week, so i'm not sure about it but haven't had any breakouts. i also have recently tried a glycolic treatment my esthetician recommended (pevonia renewing glycocides cream - it's supposed to clear up your skin, help the texture, and fade scarring). Too early to tell, but I'm liking it as a night cream. also i'm using the lush cosmetic warrior mask and love lettuce (alternating) a few times a week. i'll be excited to hear what you think about the mask of magnaminty! thanks for doing this experiment!

  28. Hi Tiffany I'm really interested in knowing how this experiment turns out. Lately I've been having the same skin problems you mention, I stopped the pill several months ago (baby search!) and I've been having breakouts nonstop since. So I bought Clinique's 3 step skincare treatment for combination oily to oily skin, plus their moisturizer "superdefense SPF 25 combination oily to oily". It works pretty well, I've been using these products twice a day for about a month now and my skin has really improved. I still have some blemishes but it keeps getting better. Anyway snce I had never heard of these Lush products (I don't know if you can get them in France), I'll wait to see how they work on you and then maybe I'll try them out. Thanks for all your Youtube videos, they're a lot of fun and a great help.

  29. Hi Tiffany,

I've been using Proactiv for 3 years and I realized my skin is becoming too dry, flakey, dull and even contribute to wrinkles abit. So i switchd to Avene acne system. It's made from natural thermal spring water. Been using it for 6 months now and it seems to be working great. I also been using the warrior mask from lush and its awesome. My skin feels and look alot better and been getting nice compliments too :)

Going natural is the way to go, and no more proactiv for me.

    Cheers
    Jenna

  30. I'm seeing a lot of Lush reviews lately on Youtube. Have they recently launched in the USA? I've used various products from them over the years and they are definately different. Favourites are BB Seaweed Fresh Facemask and Sea Vegetable Soap

  32. Hey there Tiffany... LOVE your blog and your Youtube chanel, it has slowly become my favorite!

Just a word of caution about the charcoal bar... it works great for cleaning out skin and reducing oil, but it can become VERY drying if you use it every day. I had to cut back to using it no more than twice a week, but it still does a great job of cleaning out the pores and matting the skin. Can't wait to hear how your experimentation goes!!!!

  33. I love Lush products and was an addict in Australia. Unfortunately there is NO lush outlet in Singapore so I've been without for many years.

I get hormonal breakouts as do many women. Whoever said we grow out of bad skin was lying through their teeth. Products geared for blemished skin tend irritate my skin so over the years I have searched for alternatives. Here's my regime which has worked for breakouts over the past few years.

    1) Diane 35 - yea I know it's the Pill but it's geared for regulating oil production via stablising of hormones so it works.

    2) Differin Cream (Adapalene) from the dermatologist - Excellent stuff as it forces impurities to the surface, purging all the gunk out and preventing breakouts in the future.

    3) Clindamycin Gel - most people get over the counter benzynol peroxide, salicylic acid etc etc. None of that works for me other than to create dry flakes. This stuff I use is a topical antibiotic. Been using it since my teens on spots and it clears those suckers overnight with zero drying.

So basically all 3 items I use are not from you regular drugstore, you might need to see your doctor for a script. The products can be incorporated into your regular routine which works out just fine for me.

  34. Hi Tiffany! What a coincidence I was just planning to purchase the first 3 facial products that you mentioned above!! please update us on how your skin is after this lush skin routine!! Id love to hear the results =]

  35. another tip is that vanishing cream is not actually lush's lightest moisturizer. the one with the lowest oil content, by percentage, is enzymion. i know that vanishing cream is touted as the "low-fat" moisturizer in their line, but you might thing of enzymion as another option if low oil is a priority for you. this info is straight from the employee handbook.

  36. you seriously need to get some moisture into ur skincare, your great at make up but i d ask a skin therapist for skincared advice, using products from tv.shop seems pretty insane if you ask me.
