Stila Kajal Eye Liner REVIEW

Black eye liner is probably my all time favorite cosmetic. I'm always on the lookout for a great one that is long wearing, easy to apply, waterline-safe, and of course, VERY black. I think I found it. The Stila Eye Kajal in Onyx is all of those things...and more. This is the only pencil I've ever used that applies so wonderfully to the waterline. In one light stroke, you get the most intense opaque black line that will stick around throughout the day (and night) without doing the dreaded "goop" within an hour of wear. At the longest, I wore this product for 8 hours and actually had to work to remove it from that area. I was very impressed by just how long-lasting it is. It's also very non-irritating. While wearing this product, my eyes never felt uncomfortable.
As you can see in the swatches, this liner is extremely pigmented and very black.

While this is by far my favorite pencil eye liner I've ever tried, there are a few drawbacks to consider. The product itself is extremely soft. This makes it a dream to apply, however, you really have to be careful when sharpening. The first time I sharpened it, the point broke off. However, I've sharpened it 4 times since then and have had no breakage. As long as your sharpener is sharp and you're careful, you should be fine. Since it is so soft, it requires frequent sharpening, which means you'll have to re-purchase often. Which brings me to the next drawback, the price. At $18, it's a little steep for something that wears down so quickly. However, I'll continue to use it because nothing I've ever used compares. Also, because of the softness, you can easily apply too much, causing it to build up which makes it impossible to "set". Then, it will end up smudging. With this stuff, a little goes a long way, so you really have to use a light hand. It's unlike any pencil liner I've ever used, so you really have to get used to the application.

These eye liners are available in a wide range of colors and can be found at Sephora, Ulta and wherever Stila cosmetics are sold.

Top to Bottom: Stila Eye Kajal in Onyx, Urban Decay 24/7 Eye Liner in Zero, MAC Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Engraved

I actually applied the bottom two with more pressure than the Stila to get them to show up as dark as they did.

  1. I like how black this is, but it smudges as soon as I walk out of my house. And if I set it with a matte black eyeshadow, it takes days to remove. The best I've come up with is to surround it with TFSI.

  3. I've been thinking of getting the Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner, then I saw your vid on this Stila one and my mind is now not so made up!!! I just want something that will stay where I put it, primarily talking about the waterline. You seem very impressed with this, so I think I might have been swayed....

  5. Tiffany, you should try CoverGirl's Perfect Blend Pencil Eyeliner. It's very creamy and goes on super dark. The only problem I have with it, is smudging when applied to the waterline.

  12. I can't wait to try this out! I've been using UD's ZERO for the past year or so and I love it, but if this is even darker and long lasting, I'm in! :)

  17. Ok that's it, I have to try it. Can you recommend a good sharpener? I bought MAC's...and yet somehow my UD24/7 still always breaks in it! I tried another drugstore brand and same thing!

  18. Because of you, I caved in and bought this tonight! And I love you for recommending it! I don't think I'll use my UD 24/7 again! Thanks, Tiffany! :]

  19. Hey Tiffany!!!
This comment isn't about this specific post, it's rather a big THANX for all your videos, your tutorials, your tips, your kindness and sweetness, and mostly your caring for us, helpless little "make up freshmen"!!!
I live in Brazil (talk about warm and humid weather!), which, I guess, makes you an international sucess! :D
In my town there's no MAC whasoever, so I have never even seen an actual MAC store (I seriously fear that my heart might not handle it quite so well), but I do what I can with the stuff I can get a hold of and your tutorials have strongly supported me and helped me go from a "chapstick only girl" to a real "make up junkie" (if a "MAC-virgin" girl can qualify for that expression)!
Anyway... What I really wanna say is thank you SO much for everything and keep up with the great work! Congrats! :D

  22. Tiffany - Great Blog and Videos! I am certainly apt to take your advice, but I'm wondering how the Stila eyeliner compares to MAC's smolder? I saw you compared it to engraved, which I've never tried. Let me know! Thanks!

  23. Hi !
I use Avon Eyeliner in Black and it's dark and great :)
    Plus, it's really cheap =)

  24. Since purchasing and making the video about it, do you still love it? i have been seeing reviews that it makes racoon eyes 5 minutes after you put it on

    PLEASE REPLY :-)

  25. Hey Guys! Just answering a few questions :)
Tanisha- I LOOVE this stuff still! haha, it's the only liner I use on my waterline. However, I could see where it would make raccoon eyes if you applied it to the area below your lower lash line...like on the skin. But I don't do that.

Nicole- This one is much darker than Smolder in my opinion. It's also much softer and applies thicker and easier. It lasts much longer on the waterline than smolder as well :)

  26. Hi Tiffany! I would like to know what fluid liner you use on your videos, it looks like a felt-tip pen and it seems really easy to apply... I know you've already said the name/brand on your videos but I can't seem to catch the name (English is not my mother tongue).

Also, a great trick to avoid the tip of the khol pencil from breaking off when sharpening it is to put the pencil in the freezer for a few minutes.

    Thanks for all your tips!

  27. I was totally SOLD by this review and went into sephora to buy it~ but at the end of the night, it kind of smudged to the top of my lids! is there a way i can prevent that? otherwise, i LOVE how black it is! =D

  28. I definitely want the kajal pencil. I always have a hard time making the eyeliner really dark.

  29. You can minimize the breakage of your eyeliner pencil by cooling it down prior to sharpening it. You can place your eyeliner pencil in the refrigerator or freezer for an hour or overnight before sharpening. You'll find that your eyeliner pencil will not break and crumble when you sharpen it this way.

  30. Hi Tiffany, I have the MAC powerpoint eye pencil in Engraved, but as soon as I apply to my waterline it starts to smudge off. Is the the Kajal pencil any better?

  31. Hey Tiffany, I'm just curious if you wear contacts... I've had trouble with my eyeliner (I line my waterline) getting on my contacts throughout the day, aka blurry vision. Just wondering if you (or your clients) have any experience with this and if the stile kajal would be a good product for me. Thanks so much!

  32. wow- thanks for the tip on the light application. i just got this eyeliner as part of a stila "summer set" and LOVE love love the blackness and easy application, but it smears like crazy. maybe i *have* been putting on too much to let it set. i am going to go easy next time and see what happens! thanks again!

  33. this is super helpful, as i'm on the hunt for a great black eyeliner pencil!

  34. Hmmmm, im gonna have to say you should own both urban decay 24-7 & this stila. I've had the 24-7 and it's almost gone, since seeing the kim kardashian video i went and got the stila last night, used it this morning. I was goin to return it, cause yaaa it did smudge wayyy easy but it is niceee too. So i think now im gonna keep it, go very easy with it and i wanna get me another 24-7 cause i know that stays put and sets fast and don't move! i have a hella of a time gettin it off at night. haha but i love it! so i think it's best to own both. & the lady at Jcpenney's where i got my stila said if i wasn't happy i could bring it back! I think i will make my for sure final decision tommorow after i try it on again and go light, cause this morning i was like whoaaa. & one more note, i only like using these pencils on my water line and below only. I use cheap NYC on top. Works out good for me! :) hope this helps girls ;)

  35. Hey Tiffany, I did a little research on this, and I stumbled upon a seemingly great product - New york color's waterproof eyeliner pencil. It's only 4 dollars at Sears! I know you usually like to buy department store brands, but why don't you give it a try! Write a review?

  36. This eyeliner used to be my favorite until last week. I have always bought the onyx shade because it is the blackest black of any liner and makes amazing smudgy eyes. However last week, bought a new stick and not the case-it doesn't even feel like the same pencil. It doesn't even feel like the same pencil. Anyone else notice this? It feels like the crap in Duane Reade-what a waste-ugh.
